Athens United Against Discrimination Phase II
Athens, Ga - The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement is excited to launch Phase II of its “United Against Discrimination” campaign in cooperation with businesses in the downtown area later this month. The initiative is a continuation of a campaign that began in October 2016 that asked a cross-section of downtown businesses to display a sticker as an indication that all patrons were welcome regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, immigration status, etc. This is the latest move in an aggressive effort to create a more diverse and inclusive Downtown Athens. With 60 plus businesses involved in the sticker campaign already, President Mokah Johnson plans to confirm participation and create a publicly accessible map. A new program of inclusion and diversity training for employees is also in the works. A sticker campaign meeting and phone banking session will be held Thursday, June 29th, 2017 at Athens Clarke County Library 2025 Baxter Street, 12-2 pm.Earlier this month, AADM went to City Hall to vocalize support for the creation of a permanent citizens committee - a body to make recommendations and review complaints of discrimination as an official arm of the county government. Members criticized the lack of accountability on the party of the county after its passage of the bar admittance in November.“The continuation of discriminatory practices at certain downtown bars is directly linked to a complacency on the part of the attorney’s office to monitor behavior of bars that everyone knew had a nasty history of denying access to people of color,” AADM member Ryan Heron stated. At the same meeting, affiliate organization Athens For Everyone delivered a banner, serving as a petition, to the commission signed by more than 200 Athenians in support of the creation of a permanent citizens committee as well.A final list and map of businesses involved in the “United Against Discrimination” sticker campaign will be available mid-July.Below you will find a list of businesses that have joined the " Athens United Against Discrimination" sticker campaign .
