The Arrest of John Choe: The Final Outcome
Is it illegal to refuse to show your driver’s license to law enforcement? John Choe was arrested after declining to present his ID, sparking debate.
On February 16, 2025, John Choe was parked at a Murphy USA in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, waiting out a heavy rainstorm and reading a book. When a police officer approached, Choe declined to show ID, asking if he was suspected of a crime. The officer arrested him for obstruction, claiming loitering and trespassing.
Choe’s attorney challenged the arrest, arguing there was no probable cause. State Court Judge Ryan Hope agreed, noting the 911 call and officer’s observations did not justify concern. The case was dismissed.
