This week, our community showed up with purpose.

During Fair Housing Month, AADM hosted the Athens Affordable Housing Rally, bringing together residents, advocates, and local leaders at City Hall—united in one message: add the Athens Affordable Ordinance on May 2026 agenda.

Organized by the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) Justice & Accountability Committee and a growing coalition of partners, the rally brought together residents from across the community—alongside organizers who are actively doing the work to support those directly impacted by rising housing costs, displacement, and ongoing housing instability.

In the weeks leading up to the event, organizers collected approximately 700 signatures in support of the ordinance, demonstrating strong and widespread community demand for bold, local housing solutions and formal consideration by local leadership.

The rally also underscored growing momentum at the state level. During Georgia’s recent legislative session, lawmakers advanced House Bill 1166 on Crossover Day—a measure designed to expand affordable housing options by allowing homeowners to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs), or tiny homes, on residential properties. These units, as small as 400 square feet, help reduce zoning barriers and increase housing availability.

Advocates emphasized that the progress of similar policies at the state level reinforces the feasibility and urgency of local action in Athens.

“The same types of policies we’ve been advocating for locally are now moving forward at the state level,” organizers shared. “This shows that these solutions are not only possible—they are already happening. Now is the time for Athens to act by placing this ordinance on the agenda.”

Following the rally, organizers announced plans for a follow-up meeting and a community teach-in to continue building momentum, educating residents, and organizing around next steps.

What we witnessed wasn’t just a rally, it was a reflection of the daily reality for so many in Athens. Working people who still can’t afford rent. Families doubling up just to get by. The stories shared made one thing clear, this is a community crisis, and it demands community-driven solutions.

The AADM Affordable Housing Ordinance includes real, actionable strategies centered on fairness and access—from protecting renters against discrimination to expanding housing opportunities and supporting long-term affordability. The goal is simple: build systems that work for everyone, not just a few.

This rally marked a critical moment for Athens, as residents came together not only to raise awareness, but to demand a clear and actionable step forward: placing the Athens Housing Ordinance on the agenda for consideration.

We are pushing for commitment, action, and accountability.

The work continues—and we need you in it.
