Defend the Incarcerated: Know Your Rights Workshop and Community Discussion- Addressing Jail Conditions and Incarceration Crisis
Athens, GA – July 2025 — In direct response to recent in-custody deaths and growing community concerns about jail conditions in Athens-Clarke County, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) will host a free Know Your Rights Workshop and Community Discussion titled “Defend the Incarcerated” on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street, Athens, GA.
This event will focus on how to advocate for incarcerated loved ones, navigate the jail and prison systems, and ensure proper oversight and humane treatment of those in custody.
The urgency of this initiative follows a series of tragic deaths at the Athens-Clarke County Jail. On July 8, 2025 a 31-year-old African American man died after being found unresponsive in his cell marking the third in-custody death since April 22, 2025.
Sheriff John Q. Williams attributed these tragedies to the fentanyl crisis and the "immense challenges" faced by jail staff, including a severe staffing shortage—at least 40 correctional officers short.
In addition, the AADM have received complaints from inmates and families regarding poor jail conditions, including:
- Extended periods of cell confinement
- Unsanitary living conditions
- No face-to-face visitation
- High costs of communication through electronic devices
These issues underscore the need for informed advocacy. The upcoming workshop will:
- Teach participants how to advocate for the rights and safety of incarcerated individuals
- Explain the legal rights of inmates and their families
- Provide tools to file complaints and demand transparency and accountability
- Facilitate a community dialogue on systemic change and collective action.
This workshop is especially for:
Faith-based, Educators and civic leaders who support impacted families and want to bring these critical conversations back to their congregations and networks.
Family members with loved ones currently incarcerated—particularly in Athens-Clarke County or surrounding jails—who want to learn how to speak up and protect their rights.
Formerly incarcerated individuals ready to advocate, share insights, and help others navigate the system.
Community advocates and grassroots organizers seeking tools to push for policy change, transparency, and jail oversight.
Your voice, presence, and experience matter. Whether you’re directly impacted or a concerned ally, I hope you’ll join us in this urgent call to action.
