Economic Justice Coalition, Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement and the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia will host the second phase of the Athens Smart Justice Roundtable 5:30 pm on Thursday, June 14th at the Athens – Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street, Athens, Georgia 30606.

Georgia’s over-incarceration of its citizens has had a long-term negative impact on families, communities and the allocation of taxpayers’ dollars. Gov. Nathan Deal recently signed Senate Bill 407 into law as part of the reform of the state’s criminal justice system, but more needs to be done. The Roundtable will focus on how Athens Clarke County can usher in the ACLU’s Campaign for Smart Justice.

The Campaign for Smart Justice is an unprecedented multiyear effort to reduce the jail and prison population by 50% and to combat the racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

Areas, where solutions are already being implemented, include:

  • Bail Reform
  • Sentencing Reform
  • Parole Reform
  • Community Reentry

Guest panelist includes: Deborah Gonzalez-Georgia House of Representatives, District 117; ACCPD Chief Scott Freeman, Life Griot-Founder of Chess and Community, A4E, and Superior Court Judge Eric Norris.
