She Struts For Justice Women Empowerment & Georgia Voter Tour

She Struts For Justice Women Empowerment Tour

Events will fuse public discussions, fashion, music and the arts for 2020 elections.

February 14, 2019, Athens, GA – Mokah-Jasmine Johnson co-founder of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM)  announced a seven-city empowerment tour. Kicked off in Athens on February 28, 2019, at Hendershots Cafe to teach attendees how to make a difference in their community and bring awareness to the importance of voting. Called “She Strut For Justice,” each tour date will combine a public discussion, music and the arts, hosted by AADM co-founder and president, Mokah-Jasmine Johnson.

“The 2018 elections in Georgia left many people wondering if voter suppression played a role in the final outcome,” said Johnson, who was featured recently on HBO Vice news for her work to get out the vote in Athens. “So, I wanted to do this tour to inform and encourage  everyday citizens to stay engaged and get  involved.”

The purpose of the “She Strut for Justice” tour is to bring awareness to social injustices affecting the black and brown community, women and girls; and to reinforce the importance of voting. To encourage women to unleash their voices, get involved, and join the movement, each event will begin with a roundtable discussion followed by a presentation that incorporates music, arts, and fashion.  Mokah will encourage attendees to focus on the power of organizing and mobilizing as a means to spark social change.

AADM also aims to begin mobilizing voters early to increase the participation rate of women and minorities in the next cycle of national and state elections. In each city, Mokah and her team will register voters on site and identify liaisons who can continue local registration drives and coordinate free transportation to polling locations in 2020.

“Knocking on doors during elections is not enough,” Johnson said. “We must take the time to educate and engage with potential voters now, especially those who live in marginalized communities, so they can better understand the issues, the impact of each governmental position and the importance of voting.”
