New Documentary: The Movement

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement Releases Documentary

Athens, GA. – In January 2022, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM) released a new documentary, The Movement. Directed, shot, and edited by James Preston, The Movement features interviews with Athenians involved with AADM, behind the scenes footage, and highlights how the AADM has changed the Classic City by bringing important issues to light and advocating for our community.

The Movement opens with highlights of guest speakers, footage, and photos from the peaceful protest organized by AADM in the summer of 2020 in downtown Athens. AADM co-founder, Mokah-Jasmine Johnson, speaks on the importance of AADM’s work advocating for and supporting underserved and marginalized communities in Athens.

The Movement showcases how the AADM has helped recipients of the Freedom Fund, an initiative started in 2020 that provides bailout assistance, legal defense, court fees, and more to community members that need support. Aubrie, a recipient of the Freedom Fund, discusses how AADM assisted with legal defense, housing, food, and more when it felt that no one else was listening to her needs.

Members of the Teen Social Justice Club (TSJ), a youth mentorship program for Athens teens (ages 12-17), share their experiences in the youth program and how the TSJ program has shown them their potential, taught them how to educate themselves and others, and offered a place to feel like they belong.

The Movement also features interviews with members of the community, such as ACC District 5 Commissioner Tim Denson and Director of Fondo Solidario, Kathleen McGovern, who express why they believe organizations like AADM are a vital force for meaningful change.

The Movement is available to rent or purchase online, and all proceeds collected will benefit the various programs and services offered by the AADM and allow us to continue our advocacy work in the community.
